AWS discovery day

I attended a training course yesterday, giving an overview of Amazon Web Services in 6 hours.

I always love learning new things and it's always useful to go for basics upwards because a lot of knowledge is assumed or can go for years unquestioned. There are so many web services Amazon offer, so it's impossible to be familiar with them all, anyway.

The instructor took us all through (among other things):

  • an overview of the basic global infrastructure of the AWS Cloud
  • the core AWS services, including compute, network, databases, and storage
  • benefits of using AWS (it is funded and provided for free by Amazon....)
  • security and the responsibilities of Amazon vs the user
  • an overview of the pricing model and scalability of AWS
  • migration to AWS Cloud

I found this course super helpful and a motivation to look into specific, relevant parts in more detail. It definitely helped me piece together all the different areas that I was aware of, and how they all worked together. Also some explanation of terminology specific to AWS really got things secure in my mind.

I'd recommend it to anyone looking to get into cloud computing or anyone who needs a refresher of their existing knowledge!
